Setting up Competencies

Summary

Before creating Competency records, we recommend you consider the following questions:

  • Are competencies structured along the same lines as national framework (for example NZQA in New Zealand) requirements. (Are they using industry unit standards)?
  • Does your organisation categorise competencies by their relevance (Generic, Management, Technical).
  • Has your organisation defined its own “Enterprise” competencies (Competencies that are not generic to industry but a specific only to your organisation)?
  • Does your organisation apply defined Reinforcement (skill transfer) techniques. (Processes for providing employees opportunity to apply and demonstrate competence in the workplace)?
  • Does your organisation evaluate or assess employees during reinforcement/skill transfer and what methods are used to determine competence?
  • Does your organisation have a means of structuring their competency ‘framework’ so that competencies are aligned structurally as building blocks towards higher levels of competence?
