Breaks

A Break is used when inserting a Shift/Timeband to the employee’s Roster. This usually represents unpaid time.

Breaks, whether they are paid or unpaid, can be one of the following types:

There are three tabs on the Breaks form:

Tab

Description

Details

Breaks specify the default unpaid break that an employee takes during their work day. There are two parts to this tab page, Absolute and Relative. See the following sections for more details.

Clocks

This tab page sets up the rules that clocks use for Breaks. See below for more details.

Costing

Generally costing is not set up for Breaks, but the options on this page are included for consistency within PayGlobal.

Clocks tab

This tab page sets up to three time zones in which employees are likely to clock in and out for their breaks. For example, an employee working 0600 to 1200 has a minimum break of 30 minutes set up on this tab, so the employee must take a 30 minute break. The employee clocks out for their break at 1002 and back in at 1022. They have only taken a 20 minute break. PayGlobal deems the clock in time to be 1032 (1002 + 30 minutes = 1032).

Functions

Invalid Timebands

If changing the start time of a break causes an invalid timeband, the timeband is deleted.

The only way to tell a clocked break from a split shift is the amount of time between the clock out and the clock in. Always set the amount of time in Anchor Groups | Misc | Split shifts after a break of to an amount greater than the largest clocked break plus a small buffer.

Grace Minutes

PayGlobal allows a grace number of minutes giving employees a chance to clock in without deducting an amount of time over and above the minimum break. This is in addition to the minimum break.

For example, the minimum break is 30 minutes. If Grace Minutes for that time zone is set at 0002 (2 minutes) and an employee clocks in 31 or 32 minutes later, the break time will be set to thirty minutes. For times greater than 32 minutes, a larger (clocked) break is deducted.

Break or Split Shift

PayGlobal looks at the value of Split shifts after a break of in Anchor Groups | Misc. Any clock in and out within one of these time zones that is smaller than this value is a Break. The Break is forced to the minimum amount of time specified.
